Nutrition starts on the farm
And while farming is about food production whether that be salmon, oysters, soyabeans, beef or mangoes, no farm is the same. And food production is complex: no environment is the same. Farmers have to work with the confines of an environment – soil, water availability and quality, physical terrain, temperature, sunshine, air quality, genetics and so much more – that they largely do not have control over. It’s complex, is scientific, it is not black and white.
Those who work in the food industry, nutrition and health more often that not are being questioned about both the nutritional aspects of food and diets, but increasingly are being challenged by environmental and sustainable issues relating to food production. In order to understand food and nutrition adequately, position your product range with health and sustainability in mind so that you can make informed decisions, it's important to see, feel, touch, taste, smell where it all starts: on farm.
Conversely, primary producers would benefit from seeing what happens further up the line - what they start off on their farms, and the true impact of food through the food industry and onto consumers. Breaking down silos, appreciating food as the source of nutrition, is important in upgrading the low-value commodity mindset.
Part of what makes me different is my broad and deep understanding of the complexity of the food supply. Not only is this based on scientific and public health expertise, but it also entails immersing myself across sectors, from farm to industry to supply chain to lab. I learn by exploring first hand. And that is what the nutrition food tours is all about.
